About Tandem

Tandem is an interdisciplinary communication design studio. We approach our practice with a process-oriented and holistic approach that involves active listening, research, exploration, writing, strategic positioning, and presentations in addition to user experience, graphic design, illustration, photography, video, and animation. We’re a tight-knit and compassionate group of people that work closely together on challenging subject matter. Our clients range from national social advocacy organizations and cause-based brands in the racial justice, climate justice, and voter/civic engagement space to local progressive political candidates.

These positions are currently remote, but please let us know in your application email if you’d be willing to relocate if you live outside the greater NYC area. We’re more interested in finding the right fit than we are filling a seat, so the application period is currently open ended until we find the ideal addition to our team.

> Designer

We’re in search of a talented communicator and open to a wide range of ability and experience in the process. The most important factor in our decision to work together will come down to whether you’re a good fit for this particular type of work and whether you can see yourself growing within our studio.

We work on complex, sensitive, and at times emotionally taxing social issues. For some teams, the design process begins when they launch the Creative Suite. It’s important for us to take the time to talk through the nuances of every challenge and make sure we have a collective understanding of the big picture and social complexity before our exploration can begin. Those discussions turn into research and discovery where we take the time to listen thoroughly to our client’s needs before delineating a strategy.

We’re seeking a multi-disciplinary designer that’s open to the challenge of taking on new skills. We’ll ask you to think critically, articulate your concepts thoroughly and write in addition to your skills developing and producing visual communication. Type design, animation, video, classic rendering skills, and web development experience are always a plus but what we’re really looking for is an open mind and a willingness to engage deeply in the subject matter. If you’re not interested in explaining your choices to the team, and having those choices respectfully challenged, this position probably won’t be a good fit for you.

Description:

To succeed in this role, you should be a skilled communicator above all else. You will work in direct collaboration with your colleagues to face challenges and provide value for our clients through your work.

You’ll work with your studio mates on all facets of the design process from research to production and the accompanying client presentations. A large portion of our work involves research and strategy before we begin design production. As an example of the kind of work you might encounter in our studio; over the last year we’ve worked on everything from annual reports, posters, and merchandise to rapid response, digital tools, and in-depth branding projects. At Tandem, we consider every component in a communication challenge “design,” whether it’s strategy, copywriting, or type setting. Ideally you’ve already got a broad skillset and a big picture approach to design thinking, but if you’re a specialist looking to pivot into something new, we’re open to supporting your transition.

If you are interested in participating in nuanced discussions surrounding challenging social issues, this position is a good fit for you.
